Prior
Learning Assessment Policy
Surrey College recognizes that students may
have successfully completed course work at another accredited
post-secondary institution or have attained significant learning
at a post-secondary level from work, training and other experiences
outside the formal post-secondary education system.
1. Transfer Credit:
Transfer credit refers to the granting of credit for
a course successfully completed at another post-secondary institution
or through a professional organization or other agency with
which an articulation agreement has been reached.
Transfer credit may be given on the following basis:
- Courses were taken at another accredited institution during
the past five years.
- Curriculum of the course being considered for transfer must
be equivalent to the Surrey College curriculum. There
must be a minimum of an 80% match of the curriculum.
Students must request transfer credit in writing and provide
an official transcript and course outlines from each post-secondary
institution or professional organization or agency at which
courses were taken.
Surrey College Administration will determine the status of
these criteria and award appropriate credit.
2. Prior Learning Assessment
Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) is assessment of the
knowledge that an individual requires for admission to a Surrey
College program. This assessment may be done as follows:
- Standardized tests eg. English or Math assessment test.
- Challenge tests - this is at the discretion of each department/program.
- Student Work - portfolio, practicum reports, etc.
The Principal, Co-ordinator or Instructor in the program for
which credit is requested will complete the assessment.
There will be a cost assigned to any assessment tool administered
by the College.
3. Course Challenge Policy
Students may challenge certain approved Surrey College courses
as determined by Surrey College Principal and/or Program Co-ordinators.
The cost of writing / completing the Challenge exam will be
50% of the current course tuition.
4. General Information
- A minimum of 50% of the coursework must be completed at
Surrey College in order to receive a Surrey College certificate
or Diploma.
- Successful credit granted will be noted on the student's
transcript.
Policy to Facilitate Students' Success
It is the goal of Surrey College to assist
each student in successfully obtaining their career goal.
Procedures that Surrey College will follow to facilitate this
student success are:
- Aim to direct students into programs / courses for which
they are suited and hopefully have a passion for.

they are academically prepared.
- Assure that students have an appropriate level of English
language skill (reading, writing and listening comprehension).

the instructors provide the students with an email address
so that questions can be asked between classes.
- Have part of each class time available for one-to-one assistance
for students.
- Have instructors teach in varied teaching strategies so
that the many learning styles of students are accommodated.
- Accumulate learning resources to provide an in-class reference
/ resource area for students to use.
- Provide a safe learning environment.
- Provide current technological hardware and software to accompany
the program's needs.
- Provide assistance with career counseling.
- Provide assistance with practicum placement, monitoring
and site and student assessment.
Emergency
Evacuation Drill Procedures
Fire Regulations
- Instructors must ensure that they are familiar with the
location and use of fire extinguishers for their areas as
well as being aware of the location of hazardous chemicals
and materials.
- Instructors must ensure that they are familiar with the
location of manually operated fire alarms.
- Instructors must ensure that they are aware of the proper
evacuation route from each and every one of their teaching
areas.
- Instructors must ensure that the location of fire exits
be clearly posted next to the exit in each room.
- Instructors must ensure that students be made aware of the
dangers of fire as well as the specific Fire Drill procedures
for the school.
Earthquake Drills
Earthquakes happen with no warning; therefore, life-protecting
actions must be taken at the first indication of ground shaking.
Even in the most severe earthquakes, buildings rarely collapse
completely. Injury and even death are most often caused
by the shattering and falling of non-structural elements such
as window glass, ceiling plaster, lighting fixtures, chimneys,
roof tiles and signs. There will be no time to think what to
do, therefore, of all earthquake preparedness measures, EARTHQUAKE
DRILLS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT!!!
- Drill Procedures for an Instructor and a class of students:
- Move away from windows or other potential hazards. Face
away from windows.
- Get under desk or table or other shelter or against inside
wall. If shelter moves, move with it and stay under.
- Assume crash position and be silent so directions can
be heard above the noise of the earthquake. Crash position
is on knees, head down; hands clasped on back of neck or
head covered with book or jacket.
- Stay in drop position until earthquake is over and/or
until further instructions are given.
- In science laboratories, extinguish all burners, if possible,
before taking cover. Stay away from hazardous chemicals
that may spill.
After initial shock and things settle down, Instructors will
evacuate classroom, being alert to possibility of aftershocks.
Please see Emergency Evacuation Procedures and Fire Exit routes.
- In other areas of the school, at the first sign of
an earthquake, occupants should:
- Move away from windows, shelves and heavy objects that
may fall.
- Take cover under a table or desk, in a corner or doorway.
- In halls, stairways and other areas where no cover is
available, move to an interior wall, kneel with back to
wall, place head close to knees, clasp hands behind neck,
cover side of head with arms.
- If outdoors or walking from school:
- Get clear of all buildings, trees, exposed wires or other
hazards that may fall. The safest place is in the
open.
- Assume drop position until quake is over.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
- All persons are to keep clear of driveways and travelled
portions of roadways allowing for unhampered movement of fire,
rescue and other necessary response vehicles.
- All staff are to take attendance of class under their supervision
reporting any absences promptly.
- Listen carefully for instructions regarding directions or
change of procedures.
Emergency Evacuation Procedures
- When the general alarm sounds, all instructional activity
shall cease.
- The Instructor will lead students out of the building using
the best route given the situation. Where possible, the Instructor
should use the recommended route as indicated on the Emergency
Exit Routes map.
- Students will follow the Instructor out of the building
quickly, quietly and without talking or horseplay.
- Anyone not in class at the sounding of the alarm must leave
the building by the shortest route possible.
- Once outside, the students must keep the driveways clear
for emergency vehicles. They should assemble in the designated
area. See following section.
- Students will remain assembled outside until 3 short bells
are sounded. They are then to return to their classroom.
General Instructions for Assembly
- Upon EXITING THE BUILDING (take seating plans and/or
class list and attendance forms). Lead your class outside
to the grass area west of Building 700 (across the lane).
- TAKE ATTENDANCE of your subject class and report
all absences. Send a runner with attendance slip to a clerk
who will be by the "NO Parking sign" by the grass
area.
- STAY WITH YOUR CLASS AND AWAIT FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS.
Do not let students wander or go to their cars.
- When instructed, return to building (DRILL ONLY).
Student
Enrolment Contract Policy
In order to establish a student file at Surrey
College, a candidate for enrolment must complete and submit the
following:

contract.
All policies can be found on the Surrey College website and
in the College Student Handbook.
The Surrey College Enrolment Contract is compliant to the Bylaws
of the Private Careers Training Institutions Agency of British
Columbia.
Student
Assessment/Evaluation Policy
- Instructors will issue a Course Outline to each student
in their course on the first day of class. The Course Outline
will include a section which determines how the students will
be evaluated / assessed and a description of the major assignments
required for successful completion.
- Instructors will provide a meaningful assessment of the
student's capabilities and provide feedback to the student
prior to the final financial partial refund date.
- Each department will establish a re-write policy if they
deem it necessary. If a student is permitted to re-write an
exam, the student will pay a fee for this privilege to cover
time and effort to prepare and mark the assessment tool.
Attendance
Policy
It is expected that students attend class regularly.
In the event that a student is unable to attend class, it is required
that they call in before their class start time and inform the
school. Homework and handouts may be left by the instructor to
be picked up at the Surrey College office - at the student's
request.
If a student is absent for more than two classes because of
illness, a doctor's certificate may be required. To avoid
receiving zero marks on examinations, the student must call
ahead and provide a doctor's certificate if they are going
to be absent from an exam.
Absenteeism for longer than (3) consecutive days without informing
the school and/or instructor and provision of a doctor's note
may result in dismissal.
Students with Student Loans:
If you have received government Student Aid (loans) - If
you miss 10 consecutive days of classes, or 20 percent of
your student program, you will be considered withdrawn. See
http://www.aved.gov.bc.ca/studentaidbc.

and exit the room.
Re-write Policy:
- Instructors in consultation with Department Heads/Principal
will determine whether "Re-write" exams will be
permitted for the Final Exam.
- The minimum Fee for re-write is $40/test. This covers both
the instructor time to make the test and the Instructor time
to administer and mark the test. This fee is dependent on
the length of the exam.
- All re-writes to be scheduled by program Instructor
outside of program hours and with 2 weeks of
original test.
- Fees to sit the re-write must be paid by the student to
the Surrey College office prior to the exam. Receipt
must be shown to sit the re-write exam.
- Failure to sit the scheduled exam for any reason
will result in the student forfeiting the fees. Rescheduling
of forfeited re-writes is at the sole discretion of the Instructor
and the Surrey College Principal and would require the student
to pay for a rescheduled exam. Fees for a rescheduled exam
are the same as for a re-write.
- Maximum allowable score for a rewritten exam is 80%. Score
of less than 80% will stand as the new test score. A
minimum score of 70% must be achieved.
- Fees to sit a re-write are subject to change without notice.
- A Final Exam can only be re-written once.
